What to do within the first 48 hours after a serious car accident

On Behalf of Mann Law Firm, P.C. | Dec 15, 2025 | Personal Injury

Being seriously hurt in a crash can leave you disoriented and overwhelmed. The first 48 hours may shape your medical recovery, your ability to meet Massachusetts legal requirements and the strength of any future insurance claim.

Hour 0: Safety and the police

Check yourself and passengers for injuries first. Call 911 if anyone may be hurt. Move vehicles only if it is safe and no one appears seriously injured. Turn on hazard lights and remain at the scene.

Massachusetts law requires you to stop after any collision involving injury, death or significant damage. A police report can become key evidence in fault and insurance decisions so treating it as a priority may protect you. At the scene, take a few essential steps:

  • Check for injuries: Ask if anyone feels pain or cannot move.
  • Call 911: Request police and, if needed, medical responders.
  • Exchange information: Share names, contact, license and insurance details.
  • Stay factual: Provide basics without apologizing or speculating about fault.

These actions create a clear record of what happened.

First 24 hours: Medical care and required reporting

Get a medical evaluation as soon as you can. Adrenaline may hide symptoms of concussion, internal injury or soft tissue damage. Early treatment also creates documentation that links your injuries to the crash.

If the collision caused injury, death or more than $1,000 in damage, you must file a Motor Vehicle Crash Operator Report within 5 days. Keeping this form and your police report number in one place helps you stay organized.

Start a brief symptom journal. Noting your pain levels and limits may help explain how the accident changed your routine.

Hours 24–48: Insurance and records

Notify your insurance company promptly. Adjusters may later want details about the crash, police involvement and any witnesses. Experts note that insurers often seek information such as whether a report was filed and what documentation you gathered.

A mobile app may also help you upload photos, request towing or arrange a rental car. Save all medical bills, repair estimates and receipts. These records can support your claim.

Guidance you can get next

A serious accident can leave you facing medical, financial and procedural challenges at once. Speaking with an experienced Massachusetts car accident attorney may help you understand potential timelines, insurance rules and options for recovering losses as you work toward stability.
